How To Prioritise Self-Care This Year

Start with baby steps

If you had zero time for yourself in 2019, you can’t expect to find 3 hours a day as soon as you hit 2020! Every change you make needs to start with baby steps.

Start with small chunks of time that you take for yourself. This might be 10 minutes every single day, or 60 minutes on the weekend. Find little ways that you can take care of your body, mind and soul.

Focus on adding in, rather than taking out

In the new year, many people focus on giving up habits - alcohol, smoking, junk food, scrolling through Facebook, you name it!

But when you focus on quitting habits, you’ll often fail. It’s not about taking out a habit - it’s about replacing it with something else. That’s why it can be more helpful to focus on adding in good habits.

You might like to add in:

  • A glass or two of water

  • An extra serve of vegetables

  • 5 minutes of deep breathing before bed

  • 5 minutes of journalling when you wake up

  • Homemade snacks as your ‘treats’ at the end of the day

  • Going for a walk around the block when you feel stressed

The best part about this approach? Your good self-care habits will start to crowd out those that are less healthy for you.

Decide what self-care means to you

Everyone has a different version of what self-care is. It all depends on what lights you up, recharges you and makes you feel better.

For example, Rhianna’s idea of self-care includes cuddling with her bunny, Lumi, spending time with her many plants, or having coffee and brunch with her friends.

Have a think about what it might mean to you. Here are some questions to get you thinking:

  • Do you feel best when you’re alone, with one or two friends, or a big social group?

  • Do you love spending time in nature, or do you prefer to be snuggled up indoors?

  • What types of movement make your body and mind feel their best?

Schedule self-care days and appointments in advance

Life fills up with to-dos quickly. Before you know it, another month has passed and you’ve done almost nothing to put yourself first!

That’s why it can be helpful to schedule your self-care days and appointments in advance. When you book in advance, it’s easier to keep your commitment to yourself!

Sit down to plan out your time over regular intervals. You might like to plan a month in advance, a quarter, or even a full 6 months. Whatever works for your schedule is fine.
