10 Things Your Myotherapist Doesn't Judge You For
Have you ever found yourself stressing before an appointment about what your body looks like, whether you’ve shaved your legs or what underwear you’re wearing that day?
These are common concerns that clients might experience. They openly discuss their pain and discomfort and what has bought them into the treatment room with us. But they always seem to apologise for little things when treatment begins.
That’s why we wanted to share 10 things that honestly your myotherapist does not care about when treating you.
1. Your Body Weight & Shape
The human body is a work of art. Us myotherapists love anatomy and the variation of muscle tone and bulk in each individual!
We do not care if you are an elite athlete or an occasional yoga student. We don’t care if you think have jiggly bits, cellulite, a wobbly belly or a flat bum. What we care about is that you are invested in the process of getting the best out of your body.
So please do not be self-conscious around us - we are here to help, not judge.
2. If Your Legs Are Shaved Or Not
If we had a dollar for every time we’ve have heard this apology in the clinic, we would never have to work another day in our lives!
As practitioners, this does not even register on our radar. We do not look, care or even consider as to whether your legs are shaved or not. We are far more interested in helping you achieve your goals, not how hairy your legs might be!
And after all, we do work with male clients, so hairy legs are familiar territory for us.
3. Your Ugly Underwear
Honestly, the only thing we care about when it comes to your underwear is that you actually have some on - or at least warn us if you don’t!
We all have our good undies and our ugly laundry-day undies - we get it. During a treatment session, the towel covers your underwear at all times, so we don’t even see the colour or condition.
As long as you have them on and that they are doing their job at keeping you comfortable, we’re happy!
4. If You Talk During The Treatment
Whether or not you want to talk during your treatment is totally determined by you. Your myotherapy session at The Wellness Nest sessions is totally in your control.
Want to talk to us during the entire treatment? OK, great!
Don't want to talk at all, and prefer to just zen out? Also totally fine.
The only thing we need is for your feedback when we ask, so we can determine how the session is progressing and that the pressure is right for your body.
5. Your Make-Up
As you probably have a busy life, we understand that most of your appointments will fit around other commitments. This means that you may attend the clinic with makeup etc. on.
There is really no need to worry or be apologetic about this! We do not care if it ends up on the linen or the face crest.
What we do care about is that you feel comfortable. The clinic is set up to change the linen and clean the face crest between every client, make-up or not. We even have a little station set up in the room, so you can 'put yourself back together' again before leaving the room.
6. If You Fall Asleep
If life has become so hectic that the only self-care and rest time you can squeeze in is on our treatment table - by all means, catch some zzzs.
Just be aware that we may ask you to wake up for a moment if we need to inform you of a change in the treatment plan, if we require some feedback during a technique or if you need to turn over. Then you can head straight back to dream-land.
7. Your Pain Threshold
Pain thresholds are unique to every single person. Your pain threshold can’t be compared to another’s, nor is it a competition for who can ‘handle’ the most.
Each condition and concern will present very differently. Your muscles will inform us of what they can tolerate. If we’re unsure, we will generally ask you about your pain on a scale of 0 to 10 - 0 being no pain at all, 10 being the worst pain you have ever experienced.
Please note - the motto of no pain, no gain is NOT applicable in our clinic room. We believe that effective treatment doesn’t need to have you writhing on the table. In fact, treatment is often more effective when your body is allowed to relax into the techniques and tools we apply.
8. If You Do (Or Don't) Understand What We are Saying
One of our most important rules at The Wellness Nest is that your practitioner explains all that is happening to you in simple and understandable terms. This includes the condition you might be experiencing and the treatment we’re offering to you.
We never want you to feel more confused than when you entered the room, feel intimidated by medical jargon or feel like you have no power over your recovery process.
If you are ever in the treatment room and this happens, please speak up and ask us more questions! Our practitioners have spent 3-6 years at university so we could understand that jargon well enough to explain it in terms that make sense for you.
9. Your Scars
One of the beautiful things about our profession is that we meet a variety of people. As we work with them, we learn their stories and the journey that has brought them to us at that particular time.
This process involves many of you showing us your scars, your birthmarks, your stretch marks and more. We don’t judge or will pry into why they exist. The only time we will ask about them is if we feel it might be impacting the condition you are presenting with.
At The Wellness Nest, we pride ourselves on creating a safe and non-judgemental environment. This includes ensuring you are comfortable with what has shaped you into the person you are today.
10. If You Have Been To See Another Practitioner
As the profession continues to grow, we understand that most of you will or have seen another practitioner similar to us. Please do not be embarrassed if this is the case for you!
We have full respect for all of the skilled practitioners in our industry. We also understand that particular practitioners will be of more benefit for you at different times throughout your life.
What we honestly care about is that you are receiving the best possible treatments, that you feel safe and heard and that your goals are being met by your practitioner!
