Should A Myotherapy Treatment Be Painful?

Have you ever wondered if myotherapy is painful? You might have had a rough massage treatment before, or perhaps your friends have. But let’s get to the root of this rumour and discover the truth about myotherapy.

A quick note about myotherapy vs remedial massage and other massage styles

You’re probably familiar with Swedish massage and remedial massage. You might even know of other types of massage such as Tui Na, lomi lomi and aromatherapy massage.

Each of these uses different techniques and has different goals. Swedish massage aims to relax, remedial massage aims to relieve general pain and tension. Other massage types may even aim to combine physical and spiritual or energetic healing.

Myotherapy is different to all of these. It focuses on specific and tailored management to support your rehabilitation from pain or injury. If you experience pain or a condition that affects your muscles and joints, myotherapy is probably better suited than other massage options.

But the best part about myotherapy? It’s more than just a massage! That means it can be adapted to anyone’s pain levels.

Myotherapy can still relieve pain and tension using gentle techniques. Your treatment plan will be tailored to address your concerns, but with your pain levels in mind.

Different people respond to different techniques

Because myotherapy incorporates massage along with other methods of treatment, we can use it as a toolbox to find what you respond to.

Cupping looks a lot more painful than it actually is for most people!

Cupping looks a lot more painful than it actually is for most people!

Some people love cupping – others can’t stand it. Some love a good dry needling session, and for others it is agony!

If you know that you don’t respond well to a particular technique or have had a bad experience, let your practitioner know from the start. That way we can avoid it or at least start off slowly to test how you respond to it.

Even the massage used within myotherapy can differ. We might use a gliding action, compress any trigger points or knead the muscle to release tension.

Although some might suit your situation better, we can avoid any that cause you unnecessary levels of discomfort.

It takes time to reach the underlying cause of your pain or injury

When you’re in pain, it can be tempting to rush to treating the root cause straight away. But your body will usually need some time to recover from initial treatments. If you did have it all treated at once, you would probably experience a lot of pain!

That’s why at The Wellness Nest, we will usually start by treating the superficial layers and immediate issue at hand. But over time, we can work on a deeper level and target the underlying causes of pain and injury.

The right practitioner for you is key for minimising pain

By working with a myotherapist that is experienced with your concerns, you can feel confident that they understand your situation. Before you book an appointment, reach out and ask the practitioner whether they’ve worked with your condition or similar issues before!

If you have issues with pain, please let us know!

Whether you are more sensitive to pain or have a chronic condition that affects your pain levels, we need to know. It’s nothing to feel embarrassed about – your nervous system is just wired differently to others. So let us know during your first appointment, and we can adjust the treatment to suit you.

So is myotherapy painful?

It doesn’t have to be. For some people, there might be some times of ‘good’ pain. You might also experience some mild soreness the day after a treatment, much like post-workout soreness.

But if you’re worried about pain because you’re already in enough – you don’t need to. Myotherapy can be adapted to relieve your pain without causing more.
